“The only time I get bothered by bad grammar is when it is paired off with lack of purpose.”

Spontaneity Cures Overthinking

Confidence and grammar mastery go hand in hand in communicating effectively. To this, Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO adds, “Spontaneity counts as well. It is the ability to think and speak naturally, drawing from one’s knowledge and experiences. When one takes a long time to respond in conversations, he can be misconstrued as slow, too analytical, or anxious. This can be a major setback during presentations, meetings, or an interview that can deter one’s chances for success.”

How does one improve his spontaneity? Viesca advises, “Learn from children. They come up with the answers on cue that can be humorous, charming, and disarming. This is because children act naturally. They have no hang-ups about coming up with the perfect answer. They do not over think and overanalyze.”Viesca shares these tips to be spontaneous in conversations:

1. Think English and speak English until it becomes second nature. Avoid using “Taglish.”

2. Read to stay updated.

3. Practice reading aloud so you don’t have to worry about pronunciation and sentence structure.

4. Should you find yourself groping for the right word, re-phrase your message.

5. Broaden your vocabulary.

6. Don’t aim at perfection.

7. Relax. Stand or sit erect, breathe, and just speak naturally.
